Nottingham Forest are set to smash their transfer record with the signing of Joao Carvalho from Benfica.
Aitor Karanka has identified the midfielder has his main summer target and is closing in on landing the player for around £13m, according to Sky Sports.
Carvalho could be joined by team-mate Diogo Goncalves at the City Ground with a season-long loan move nearing completion.
Forest's previous record transfer was the signing of striker Britt Assombalonga in 2014 for £6.2m.
Leeds United are weighing up a move for Brentford defender John Egan.
The Yorkshire Evening Post report the Whites are keen on the Bees' club captain who has two years to run on his contract at Griffin Park.
Egan, 25, can play in central defence or as a right-back and played 34 games last season.
Reading FC are hoping to tie up a deal for Aston Villa centre-back Tommy Elphick over the next week.
Royals boss Paul Clement has made three signings so far this summer - Andy Yiadom, David Meyler and John O'Shea - but remains keen on making further recruits before the start of the season.

Elphick spent the second half of the season on loan with Reading but was limited to just four appearances due to injury.
However, with Villa struggling financially, the defender is set to leave Villa Park and Royals are looking to finalise a move for the player ahead of pre-season.
Blackburn Rovers winger Craig Conway has signed a new one-year deal with the option of a further year.
The 33-year-old former Cardiff player has been at Ewood Park for four years, netting 20 goals in that time.
Conway was a key part of Rovers' promotion to the Championship last season from League One.
Burnley's pursuit of West Brom pair Jay Rodriguez and Craig Dawson is set to rumble on.
The Baggies have rejected a £25m offer for both, according to the Express and Star.
Jonny Evans has already left the Hawthorns to join Leicester City and it appears West Brom are not keen on letting others follow suit.
Aston Villa midfielder Jack Grealish has been the subject of a £15m bid from Tottenham Hotspur.
The 22-year-old appears to be leaving Villa Park this summer and it's Spurs who have upped the pressure on Villa, according to Sky Sports.
The player is rated at £40m and has been linked with a number of sides already in this transfer window.
